At 2.30 a.m. on Monday 9 September, 1940 a large bomb struck Block 1, about the centre of the north side of the Hospital, and caused the collapse of three floors and the death of two nurses and four masseuses, who were crushed in the masonry. Nurse Durham, Nurse Cynthia J. Walter, Miss Doucet, Miss Mortimer Thomas, Miss Dunn and Miss Lockyer.
