Stone, Oliver John
Second Lieut. O.J. Stone, who died in France on September 22nd of wounds received the previous day, was born at Cumnor, Sydenham, on December 5th, 1886, being the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Stone.
He was educated at the Grange, Eastbourne and Rassall School where he took many science prizes, and afterwards studied Chemistry at King's College London. Subsequently he took the degree of B.Sc. at the University of London, intending to practice in chemical research. After doing duty as a special constable, he volunteered for service in the army and joined the Artists' Corps, and later obtained a commission in the Wessex Regiment R.F.A. Serving in France he had just been transferred to a battery of the 41st Brigade when he met his death.
His old House Master at Rassall writes: 'Of a singularly sweet and lovable nature, Oliver Stone made many friends and no enemies, and a large host of schoolfellows will join with his immediate kinsfolk in echoing the spirit of "Quis desiderio sit pudor aut modus tam cari capitis?'
