Letters from his mother, January 1949


“My husband and I went to the memorial Service at the Bec School last term where our son Michael Shields was educated and won an Exhibition in Journalism to King’s College in 1937. He was killed at Dunkirk in 1940 at the age of 21. We have never heard from King’s College whether his name is on the Roll of Honour.”

“Michael Alexander Shields, King’s College 1937, having gained an Exhibition in Journalism. On July 8th 1939 he obtained his Diploma in Journalism having passed with Distinction in Practical Journalism. In 1939 he was called up in the militia and was posted to the 1/7 Battalion, Middlesex Regiment. He was sent to France on January 13th 1940 and was killed at Nieuport on May 30th 1940. His rank was Corporal.”
