Deller, Harold James
Second Lieutenant Harold James Deller was born on September 25th, 1896, and after being educated at the Dulwich Preparatory School and at Dulwich College, he entered King's in October, 1914, with an Arts scholarship, though he went into the Medical Faculty. He stayed at King's till December, 1915, when he left to join the army. In February, 1916, he sat for his entrance examination for Woolwich and passed into the Royal Military Academy the following June. He was gazetted as Second Lieutenant in the R.F.A. the subsequent February. He went to France last March and saw action at Messines and Ypres, where he was killed in action on July 30th. He was buried in the military cemetery at Dickebusche. He was esteemed by all, and those who are still at college who remember him will appreciate his major's words which were: "He was beloved by all ranks of his regiment. He never spared himself at his work and would have risen high in the service if he had been spared. In laying down his life for England we have lost one of the best types of officer and gentleman I have ever seen." King's College Review, Dec. 1917
