Codd, Stephen Arthur Herbert
The Theological Faculty mourns the loss of one of its members by the death in action of Sec. Lt. S. A. H. Codd, late of the Gloucestershire Regiment. Born in 1891, he was educated at Westminster School where he was a King's Scholar. After a period in the office in the High Commissioner for South Africa he was led to decide to take Holy Orders, and, being granted a theological scholarship he came to King's in 1913. At the close of his first year he successfully passed the examination for the Inter. B.D. but upon the outbreak of hostilities he volunteered at once and joined one of the Universities' and Public Schools battalions of the Royal Fusiliers. Three months later (December, 1914) he was gazetted to the 11th battalion of the Gloucestershire Regiment which was assigned for reserve purposes. However, in September, 1915, he was sent out to Gallipoli whence after passing through severe fighting and severer weather he was invalided home. After a prolonged period of convalescence he was sent to France with another battalion of his old regiment. One month later (9th September, 1916) Codd went into action against a strong German position near the High Wood and he alone of all the officers of his battalion penetrated into the German trenches. He was never seen again and all enquiries point to the conclusion that he must have lost his life at the time. His Colonel wrote: "The regiment attacked on the 9th and your son gallantly led his men into the enemy's lines but were driven out by superior numbers. Your son was last seen at the head of his men ...... he was a brave splendid officer and at once made himself popular with his brother officers and men." King's College Review, June 1917
