Carpenter, Herbert Montague Soames
Captain Herbert Montague Soames Carpenter, aged 31, Duke of Wellington’s Regiment, the elder son of Major and Mrs H. Carpenter, of Fleurbaix, Esher, Surrey, was killed on July 6. Educated at King’s College School (where he was in the Cadet Corps), he chose the Stock Exchange for a career. He gained a silver cup as a heavy weight boxer, and in the football field he got his caps with the Molesey and Old King’s Rugby Football Clubs. He joined the Kingston Rowing Club in 1902, and rowed for his club at Henley, 1912. He was elected honorary secretary in 1912 and captain in 1914, which position he held at the time of his death. He also served three years in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, his gun team winning the heavy gun loading competition. He was given his commission as second lieutenant in September, 1914, being made lieutenant in the following November, and obtained his captaincy in May, 1915, after a course at Camberley Staff College, where he was specially mentioned for tactics.
