Commission in East Surrey 10th Reserve in December 1915. Trained at Chelmsford and Fermoy, Ireland. Went to France 13 July 1916 and was reported slightly wounded and missing after an attack near Grandcourt on 18 November 1916 and his body was found by a wounded officer of the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry on 20 November 1916 Guy's Hospital Reports Vol.LXX, War Memorial Number
