Notes

Hodgson was committed for trial on charges of forgery, perjury, and attempting to obtain money by false pretences in January 1914, for forging a request for the repayment of £374 10s in-come tax under the name of “Andrew Anson”. Ref: *6 *7 The fraud was undertaken in Hodgson's capacity as a civil servant dealing with the supertax, which at the time earned him a salary of £700 to £800 a year (around £75k in today's money). Although Hodgson "...was not in financial straights", the Times reported, "he had become eccentric, absorbed and morose". Ref: *8 Hodgson pleaded guilty to the charge, saying he had become worried that he would die and thought what would become of his wife and children. "The idea of making money occurred to him," said the Times, "and the fraud came up ready made, as from May, 1912, the whole office was obsessed with the idea that people were defrauding the Commissioners by demanding income-tax to be returned on shares which were in the names of foreign persons." Hodgson was sentenced to twelve months imprisonment. Ref: *8
