Description

Photograph of British troops [on V Beach], watching shell burst in water from Turkish gun 'Asiatic Annie'. The caption on the reverse reads "The column of water seen in the photograph is caused by the bursting of a Turkish shell. These shells come from a gun which the British soldiers have christened "Asiatic Annie", and sometimes fall in the sea. When they do, and explode, they kill a lot of fish. When "Asiatic Annie" has ceased firing our men dive in and collect the fish, which makes a welcome change for breakfast of dinner." No 2578. From a collection of official photographs of the Dardanelles Expedition, 1915-1916.
