Thomas Edward Lawrence, later known as Lawrence of Arabia, read history at Jesus College Oxford. As part of his degree, he was required to submit a special thesis - Lawrence chose medieval military architecture as a subject. He embarked on a cycling tour of France in the summer of 1908 undertaking research equipped with a camera and sketchpad.
Lawrence had previously visited France in 1907 and this collection includes a selection of photographs of castles, cathedrals, bridges and fortifications from these tours. The photographs came into the possession of Captain Sir Basil Liddell Hart - a friend and biographer of Lawrence.
