This is the first album of five belonging to Bernard Floud (1915-1967), relating to his journey to China, 1938, as part of a League of Nations student delegation. The album contains photographs of countries travelled through en route: France, Italy, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Egypt, India and Indo-China.Ā

It also includes Floud's letter of introduction from the Chinese Embassy, London (in Chinese) and reveals a wealth of detail including images of local life and street scenes, the public buildings he encountered on his journey including universities and the landscapes through which he passed including the Syrian desert.

Other delegation members included James Klugmann, a leading British Communist and later the official historian of the British Communist Party; Molly Yard, who later became well known US feminist activist, and Grant Lathe, who was to pursue a career as a biochemist.

After military service during World War Two, and a career as a civil servant and farmer, Floud served as a Labour MP from 1964 until his death in 1967.
