Photographs from the collection of Maj Gen Sir Edward Louis Spears (1886-1974). Chateau de la Hayes. A small group of prisoners were being taken up to Lorette when one of them stabbed and killed the Corporal of the escort. On arrival at la Haye a 'Drum Head Court Martial' was held. No one knew which prisoner had done it but one was condemned. What followed lasted 5 minutes. A priest was called for an a bearded gunner who had been standing by stepped out. 1.
