Learning from Lister

The White Album

The sumptuous volume from which three reproductions are shown here was presented to Lister in 1895 by his colleagues and pupils. As directed by Lister’s will, it was bequeathed to the Royal College of Surgeons by his nephew, the surgeon Sir Rickman John Godlee (see section 'Portraits of Lister').

The images, reproduced by kind permission of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, show the title page, the garden at King’s College Hospital and King’s College Hospital itself. King’s College Hospital was then located near the Strand, not at Denmark Hill. The artist responsible for the watercolours is unknown. Other illustrations in this volume depict other places associated with Lister’s career, such as the universities of Glasgow and Edinburgh.
