About The Maori Messenger
The prodigal son kneeling in his moment of repentance as a swine herder, from The Maori messenger [FCDO Journals Collection]Te Karere Maori (The Maori messenger) was published in New Zealand by the staff of the Native Office.
It was the official bi-lingual periodical and was published from 1855 to 1863. The Native Office had previously published another journal of the same name.
The purpose of the journal was to provide information for Maori readers. It was one of the longest running Maori language periodicals published by the government during the nineteenth century.
