Stereoscope photographs

1851 Great Exhibition1851 Great Exhibition1851 Great Exhibition1851 Great ExhibitionThe Wheatstone collection in the Archives of King’s College London holds a series of stereoscope photographs commissioned specifically for use in Wheatstone’s stereoscope.

Subjects include views of the 1851 Great Exhibition and a selection of images by the leading early British photographer Roger Fenton (1819-1869).

From these beginnings, the College earned a reputation as a centre of excellence in the new science of photography, not least with the appointment of Fenton’s colleague, Philip Delamotte as Professor of Drawing and Fine Art and with the establishment of one of the world’s first university courses in the subject.
