Submarines and midget submarines
X-Craft midget submarine (1943-1945)
At sea, technological innovation also moved beneath the surface.
With advances in propulsion technology after 1900, submarines began to enter routine military service.
By World War Two extensive German deployment against Atlantic convoys resulted in the sinking of more than 3,000 Allied ships.
Midget submarines, or ‘X-craft’ were used in some of the most daring, and stealthy, naval operations of the War, not least the successful Allied deployment against the German battleships, Tirpitz and Scharnhorst off Norway in September 1943.
