Cavalry
Where the Cavalry Stands To-day (1927)Cavalry - horse mounted soldiers – had for centuries remained pivotal to fighting wars.
Archives of military history prior to World War One provide good testimony of the use of horses and other animals in campaigning.
The value of the horse on the battlefield had been discovered more than five thousand years before and the change in the second decade of the twentieth century was too abrupt for some.
Lt Col HVS Charrington of the 12th Royal Lancers in Where Cavalry Stands To-day could write as late as 1927 that the day when mechanised warfare would clear horses from the battlefield had 'not yet arrived'.
But the change had happened.
