Stories of Strand-Aldwych
The ‘Stories of Strand-Aldwych’ project has investigated the histories of the real and imagined Strand along and between the frontages now owned or occupied by King’s College London. This collection of stories, provides intimate details of the everyday life in and around the Strand. Thousands of past lives on the Strand lie buried in archival documents, at King’s and elsewhere; this exhibition lets some of them back onto the street where they were lived. This project brought together academics, archivists, and students from across King’s. Collectively, they have uncovered the stories that provide a fascinating insight into the Strand space and its built environment. The Strand 1899. [1]
During the project our researchers have focused their efforts on the following principal themes:
- The agency of women.
- Migration.
- Global Connections.
- Crimes.
- LGBT+ Histories.
- Science, Technology, and Medicine.
- St Mary le Strand. `A map of the parish of St Martins in the Fields`.[2]
The purpose of this online exhibition is to explore the different stories of those who lived, worked, and walked through the Strand-Aldwych area. Thousands of past lives on the Strand lie buried in archival documents, at the institutional archive of King’s College London and elsewhere; this exhibition lets some of them back onto the street where they were lived.
