Press criticism
Ellis Ashmead Bartlett, 1909 The war reporters Ellis Ashmead-Bartlett and Keith Murdoch (father of Newscorp chief Rupert Murdoch) were highly critical of the campaign and Sir Ian Hamilton’s performance as commander of the MEF in particular.
Keith Murdoch Ashmead-Bartlett gave an interview to The Sunday Times, published on 17 October 1915.
This was the first detailed account of the campaign and was widely circulated and republished in The Times and Daily Mail as well as in Australian papers.
At the same time, Hamilton was removed from his position and replaced with Lieutenant General Sir Charles Monro, and the decision was taken to evacuate.
