Leaflet with bright green back showing drawing of a family striding forward Ministry of Information publication, 1940s

Rationing and shortages were serious problems on the wartime Home Front, and consequently stimulated improvisation and inventiveness in the sourcing and preparation of food.

The Ministry of Health, Ministry of Food and other Government departments provided extensive guidance relating to diet, particularly for infants and children, and published recipes to promote healthy, tasty and nutritious eating for adults with access to a limited range of food stuffs, often using cartoons and humour to get the message across.
