Episode 2 - LEAD SOLDIERS
Introduction by Anda Anastasescu
Bucharest 1918. Five-year-old Constantin (Costi) meets his WWI veteran father for the first time. The child had found a fascinating pastime: improvisations on the piano. Later, these will become public and renowned - people would flock to his performances in the style of Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Wagner and other composers. I perform excerpts from his first published piano work, the piano suite Children’s Games No. 1 - remarkably sophisticated in its expressive, harmonic, rhythmical and technical aspects for a 17 year old composer. Is it a coincidence that the opening piece is called Lead Soldiers? And how does Costi achieve it?
