Michael Solomon Alexander

Engraved image of Victorian divine in clerical attire holding bookRt Revd Michael Solomon Alexander, 1843Michael Solomon Alexander (1799-1845) was the first Anglican Bishop of Jerusalem and was Professor of Hebrew at King's College, 1832-1841.

Alexander's parents were Jewish but after moving from his native Poland to England, he converted to Christianity in 1825.

He quickly proceeded to holy orders and was a leading figure in the London Society for Promoting Christianity amongst the Jews, translating the New Testament and Anglican liturgy into Hebrew.

He was consecrated Bishop of Jerusalem in November 1841 and died in 1845.
