General Ismay
Air Chief Marshal Sir William Elliot is shown with General Ismay (Ref: Elliot 8/4/5c)General Hastings Lionel Ismay was born in 1887 in Nainital, India. He was educated at Charterhouse School and then the Royal Military College, Sandhurst.
His career began in the Indian Army but in 1914, he transferred to Somaliland to serve with the Somaliland Camel Corps where he remained until 1920.
Ismay's role in Britain's fight against Sayyid Mohammed Abdullah Hassan's forces was crucial.
Following the end of the Somaliland Campaign, Ismay enjoyed a successful career highlighted by his role as the first Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) from 1952-1957.
He died in 1965, aged 78.
