Beryl White in India

Watercolour of boats at CalcuttaBeryl Nina Sophie White was the daughter of John Claude White (1853-1918), Political Officer of Sikkim and amateur photographer and Jessie Georgina Ranken (1857-1928).

She was born on 6th June 1877 in Burdwan, a town of British India about 67 miles north west of Calcutta.

Beryl grew up and lived in India for most of her life.

Beryl White with friendShe only left when her husband, Captain (later General) Henry Hugh Gordon Hyslop (1873–1932) of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, whom she married on 19th April 1904 in Sikkim, retired from the British army.

This is how Beryl describes her future husband in a letter to her grandmother:

‘Oh, Grannie darling I wish you knew him, he’s such a dear. I am so happy I am sure you will love him and he will suit you down to the ground. He is six foot two so nice looking, dark hair which is turning a little grey. He (has) such nice eyes which I think are blue, but I tell him they are green, with long eye lashes. And he is always so beautifully turned out. He is just a darling and we have had such glorious talks. But it all depends on what his father will do.’
