Ellenberger's publications

  • The history of the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, Volume 6, 1940- 1948 (Gale and Polden, Aldershot, 1961).

The collection was given to Liddell Hart by Ellenberger during their years of correspondence, 1936-1970, and was incorporated into Liddell Hart's reference material. The Liddell Hart collection was purchased by King's College London in 1973.

The papers notably include typescript operational orders from 64 Infantry Bde, 21 Div, Western Front for May 1916-Nov 1917. Operations detailed include the advance on Flers-Courcelette, Battle of the Somme, between 15-22 Sep 1916 by 15 Corps; assault by 7 Corps on German positions on the River Cojeul, near Hénin, 9-12 Apr 1917 and the attack near Polygon Wood, Third Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele), by 10 Corps, 4 Oct 1917. The collection also includes casualty statistics for 64 Infantry Bde, naming all officer casualties, between Jul 1916 and Nov 1918. Reports as General Staff Officer 3, War Office, detail a reconnaissance tour of eastern Belgium and Luxembourg, undertaken with Maj William Torr, West Yorkshire Regiment, assessing the suitability of the whole area for future military operations, with a particular emphasis towards the possibility of the deployment of armoured forces. Also reports on tours of Austria, Hungary and Czechoslovakia (15/9/3-6), highlighting the military capabilities of the three countries, the political background, the economic climate and speculation on possible future developments, including the possibility of Anschluss between Austria and Germany and the growth in popularity of the Austrian Nazi Party, 1931-1932.

The papers of Brig George Fothergill Ellenberger constitute section 15/9 of the papers of Capt Sir Basil Liddell Hart. The photocopied reports (15/9/2-6) were added to the Liddell Hart papers in March 1970. This arrangement has been retained in the present catalogue, Jan 1998.
