The Modern Greek Department was established in 1919, when the Koraes Chair was inaugurated following a subscription campaign and a grant from the Greek Government, and named in honour of Adamantios Koraes (1748-1833), the scholar and advocate of Greek national independence. The Department became known as the Department of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies in 1972, and since 1989 has been part of the School of Humanities.

- Scope and content
The records of the Department of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies comprises correspondence, invoices, publications, examination papers, reading lists, lists of lectures and seminars, and posters, 1922-1993. These notably include a copy of The siege of Vienna in 1693 , edited by E H Marshall (London, 1922); papers relating to The Journal of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies , including proposals for the establishment of the journal, publishing agreements and correspondence with contributors, 1970-1977; carbon copies of bibliographies on theology including early Christianity and on Armenian palaeography, architecture, music and philology, [1970-1980]; exhibition posters celebrating the career of Romanian poet, Mihai Eminescu, [1970-1980]; lists of departmental courses and seminars, 1972-1975; student reading lists, 1973-1975; drafts of sessional exam papers, 1975-1989; correspondence and invoices relating to the purchase of copies of Politics and the Academy: Arnold Toynbee and the Koraes Chair by Richard Clogg, sold in aid of the Burrows Library, King's College London, 1986-1988; correspondence concerning alumni and the European Community ERASMUS and LINGUA programmes for student exchange within Europe, with invoices, funding application forms and supporting materials, 1989-1993; correspondence relating to applications for vacant lectureships, 1990.

Administrative records are generally closed for 30 years except for published material and some committee and other minutes. staff and student records are subject to an 80 year closure period after the date of leaving, but may be consulted by Departmental and other College staff with permission from the Head of Department.
