12 THE HISTORICAL BACKGROUND King's College itself has not ceased to evolve Developments in molecular physics and biophysical research have made the College unique centre for development in these fields The large Department of Mathematics has greatly strengthened its position as selective undergraduate school and as one of the strongest postgraduate schools in the country It is making direct contribution to secondary education by offering refresher courses to teachers field centre for multi-disciplinary ecological studies is operational in Rogate in Sussex The work of the Department of War Studies involves the study of many aspects of the phenomenon of war including civil-military relations and the question of arms control In 1964 Faculty of Music was established and during the 1970s the Law School developed wider variety of courses with particular emphasis on European Law In 1975 an inter-disciplinary course in Human Environmental Studies was established drawing on expertise in the faculties of Science Medicine Engineering and Laws Shortly after another interdisciplinary venture Centre for Law Medicine and Ethics was established to provide forum for discussion of modern day problems such as the limits of human life The Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies now includes degree course concerned with developing in students capacity to understand the nature of religious beliefs and practice as they are to be found in the major religious traditions of Europe Asia and Africa and Centre for New Religious Movements has been established The 1980s have ushered in particularly rapid series of constitutional changes In 1980 the then-named Theological Department was formally reunited with the rest of the College as single constituent College of the University the whole again to be known as King's College London King's College Hospital Medical and Dental School had been made an independent School of the University in 1948 following the National Health Act In 1983 after some years of discussion on the appropriate level of medical education provision it once again became part of King's College as King's College School of Medicine and Dentistry Just as medical education was put under scrutiny in this period so too was the whole composition of the University of London As part of major reorganisation Queen Elizabeth College and Chelsea Colleges were joined in August 1985 with King's College to form King's College London KQC With the merger of the three Colleges are brought together the three major strands in the history of education academic technological and women's education It is firm foundation for large multi-faculty College of some 000 students It is history of responsiveness to the needs of society and tradition of looking forward rather than back
