GENERAL INFORMATION The College Buildings The main building is sited at the eastern end of the Strand its architect was Robert Smirke who designed it as complement to Sir William Chambers's grand conception of Somerset House It took two years to complete and the first session opened in 1831 The building which adjoins Somerset House includes the Chapel Great Hall lecture theatres museums libraries and number of laboratories for practical work in most subjects Over the years additional property has been acquired and converted to College use in the area surrounding the main building bounded by the Strand Surrey Street and Temple Place and other properties have been acquired in outlying areas The first stage of major rebuilding programme was completed in 1971 the new Strand frontage houses number of arts and science departments including physics and chemistry and part of the library Stage two of the re-development programme was completed in 1975 with the opening of the Macadam Building in Surrey Street In addition to providing first-rate facilities for the Students' Union which occtipies several floors with magnificent views over the Thames the building accommodates refectories and social facilities for all members of the College and additional offices and laboratories for the Engineering Faculty Two academic departments Biophysics and Plant Sciences are housed outside the main College site The Department of Bio- physics is situated in Drury Lane about five minutes' walk from the Strand The Department of Plant Sciences conducts its classes at Half Moon Lane Dulwich near to Heme Hill and North Dulwich railway stations and can be reached by bus services from the Strand Clinical studies in the King's College School of Medicine and Dentistry are largely taught at Denmark Hill directly adjacent to King's College Hospital There is field centre for multidiscipline ecological studies at Rogate in Sussex 73
