180 Library Facilities the library rules is obtainable and groups of students are conducted round the Library during the first few weeks of the autumn term The University Library contains over million volumes covering all subjects taught in the University and takes some 000 current periodicals it is strongest in Arts subjects and particularly in English literature especially in Shakespearean studies The Library also contains many important special collections such as the Goldsmiths' library of early economic literature the Durning-Lawrence library of Elizabethan literature the Sterling library of rare English books the Bromhead collection of works on London and the library of the Family Welfare Association Two reading rooms Middlesex North and Middlesex South con- tain extensive collections of bibliographical and other reference works including recent London University examination papers There are also periodicals room in which the current numbers of some 800 journals are displayed and back volumes of certain periodicals in frequent demand are available on open access Music library containing books periodicals scores and gramophone records Geography and Geology library including maps History library devoted to English and European history Philosophy library Psychology library Palaeography room containing comprehensive collection of facsimiles and catalogues of manuscripts and works on palaeography Romance Languages and Literature collection United States area studies library and Latin-American library There is also an open access library of some 50 000 volumes of works in greatest demand in other subjects The Library is provided with microform reading equipment and has well equipped Photographic Section able to undertake most forms of document reproduction the Section has self-service photocopying machines Hours of opening Term and Easter Vacation Monday-Thursday 30 -9 00 Friday 30 30 Saturday 30 -5 30 Christmas and Summer Vacation Monday-Saturday 30 -5 30 The Library is open only for reference on the Spring Bank Holiday and the previous Saturday No book can be fetched from the
