Faculty of Music 135 Undergraduate Courses ADMISSION OF STUDENTS Details of procedure to be followed by students seeking admission to the undergraduate courses leading to the degree of Mus are given on page 75 Applicants are admitted by the Sub-Dean of the Faculty on behalf of the Dean of the Faculty of Music Full conditions are set out in the General Prospectus available from the Admissions Office COURSES FOR MUS DEGREE The course for the Mus degree extends over three years The initial terms of study are concerned with the development of student's skills on broad front By his second Christmas vacation he should have firm grounding in several basic aspects of the practice and theory of music so that he is in position to see how his future career may develop and begin to specialise accordingly The syllabus comprises courses in melody harmony and counterpoint 1575-1850 general repertory three short periods of musical history studied in greater detail aural tests musical analysis keyboard musicianship twentieth- century and non-Western music Attention is also paid to performing and composing skills where these are offered The student's second and third years are spent in preparing for the Mus examinations which are taken at the end of his second and third years These consist of two stages Common core minor options -each student follows five courses in which he or she is examined generally towards the end of the second year by written and practical examinations portfolio submission and current assessment with viva-voce These are Musical Techniques Musical Analysis Composition Musical History and General Musicianship Each student then chooses two of the following courses leading to major option examination at the end of the third year which follows the same method of examination as the common core Musical Analysis Composition Musical History and Performance The Faculty considers it important that undergraduates should acquire wide experience and knowledge of music and that they should extend their powers of original independent and sustained thought through their musical studies Instruction is by means of lectures tutorials discussion groups and seminars Undergraduates in
