128 Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences based University examinations are held at the end of the third and sixth terms Stage and Stage II respectively In course assessment however plays significant part in determining student competence After completing the Stage II examinations successful candidates proceed to their clinical training at Denmark Hill SECOND COURSE The course of study for the Second Examination for the degree of Bachelor of Dental Surgery extends over four terms At the end of the first Session the Second Examination Part consists of separate papers in Anatomy Biochemistry and Physiology Clinical studies at the hospital commence in the fourth term and the Second Examination Part Β in Special Dental Anatomy is taken at the end of this term Students successful at the Examination held after three terms proceed for their clinical training to Denmark Hill Unsuccessful students in the Part Examinations are allowed second attempt before the beginning of the fourth term If they fail at this time they are required to withdraw from the course INTERCALATED COURSES As mentioned previously students who show particular promise in either their Medical or Dental courses and achieve good passes in their examination are encouraged to take an additional course leading to the Sc degree in the University of London This intercalated course is based on course unit structure which extends over three terms in the case of Medical students and six terms in the case of Dental students The course units are closely integrated with those run in The School of Biological Sciences thus affording wide range of course units from which to choose It is usual for students to proceed to their clinical training after completing their Sc but some places for postgraduate research and study are available at King's College prior to proceeding with clinical studies Postgraduate Courses Internal and external graduates of the University of London and grad- uates of other universities are admitted to courses leading to the degrees of Sc in Human and Applied Physiology and Phil or
