84 General Information UNIVERSITY ACCOMMODATION OFFICE Accommodation Officer Miss Beatrice Pyle-Howard Students who need advice about accommodation should write to the Accom- modation Officer University of London Accommodation Office Univer- sity of London Union Malet Street London WC1E 7HY An information booklet issued by that office is included in the papers sent to each student when place at College is offered register of all types of accommodation covering most London districts is kept and every effort is made to meet the requirements of each student However owing to the great demand for rooms in London it is not possible to guarantee that the exact type of accommoda- tion desired can be provided Students living in privately rented accommodation cannot expect to find it in central London and must be prepared for journey of up to 45 minutes to College Most of the accommodation available is in family homes but the services offered vary from cooking facilities only to partial board breakfast with evening meal daily full board at the weekend The Accommodation Office is open to students all the year round between 30 and 00 and from 00 to 30 Monday to Friday Present students seeking accommodation for October should apply in person between the middle of May and the end of June after that priority is given to new students for the October session During the summer vacation students are welcome to consult the notice board The Accommodation Office includes on its register addresses of flats and houses and priority is given to married students Advice can also be given on agents and likely areas for accommodation The Accommodation Office cannot book private accommodation in advance for students coming from overseas Temporary accommodation should be reserved through consulate travel agency or friends Once student has reached England and definitely secured university place applica- tion can then be made to the Accommodation Office preferably in person Students requiring flats should call not more than four weeks before they are prepared to pay the rent of flat or house This type of accommodation cannot be provided before the applicant arrives in London nor can details be sent by post outside London list of inexpensive hotels where temporary accommodation can be booked is available on receipt of stamped addressed envelope It is wise for those seeking flats to come in the summer before September October when the Office is extremely busy Students resident in the should move to their flats in July or August if they can since accom- modation is more easily available then Refectories These are situated in the Macadam Building and are available to staff and student members of the College They normally provide light refreshments luncheons and teas from 30 to 45 on
