Library Facilities 153 Other special collections which have enriched the Library's resour- ces include library of some 000 volumes on electricity and kindred subjects up to the year 1875 bequeathed by Professor Sir Charles Wheatstone the libraries of Dr Furnivall Professor Skeat and Professor Reed now incorporated in the English library collection of works on modern Greek studies left to the College by former Principal Dr Burrows which was supplemented by gift of some 800 volumes from Dr William Miller's library collec- tion of material relating mainly to Goethe and Schiller assembled by Mrs Frida Mond comprehensive collection of works in the German language in the fields of literature history science andjudaica formed by Dr Ludwig Kantorowicz the mathematical library of Mr James the zoological library of the Rev Stebbing collec- tion of books from the library of the Rev Professor Maurice presented by his grandson Major-General Sir Frederick Maurice the library of the Rev Professor Box in Hebrew and Old Testament studies the theological collection of the Rev Professor Η Relton the Portuguese library of Professor Prestage the historical books of Professor Hearnshaw the books on French literature of Pro- fessor Louis Brandin the classical and patristic collection of Professor Alexander Souter together with his papers the classical library of Professor Enk purchased with the help of generous grant from the Nuffield Foundation collection of works on Dante and Italian Renaissance literature from the library of Mrs Linetta de Castelvecchio Richardson books on German literature from the library of Professor Norman the liturgical library of the Rev Professor Ratcliff the library of German Law of Professor Cohn and the library of military studies of Sir Basil Liddell Hart Also accommodated in the Library on deposit are the libraries of the George Macdonald Society and the Charles Williams Society The Library also maintains College collection small and varied but growing collection of books and pamphlets by or about notable people connected with the College Among them are works by the prominent contemporary novelists Maureen Duffy and Susan Hill and the poet Johnson who were all former students in the English Department of the College Liddell Hart Centre for Military Archives The Liddell Hart Centre for Military Archives serves as depository for papers still in private hands which bear on Britain's defence policy
