144 Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies admitted by the Sub-Dean of the Faculty on behalf of the Dean of the Faculty Full conditions of entry are set out in the General Prospectus of Undergraduate Courses available from the Registrar COURSES AND SUBJECTS OF STUDY The course is normally of three years duration All students take basic courses in the first year Subjects of study in the second and third years include Old Testament New Testament Greek Testament Philosophy of Religion Christian Doctrine Liturgical Studies Christian Ethics Church History and the Study of Religions There is wide choice of optional and special subjects within the above fields of study three-year course leads to the degree in Religious Studies and also to the degree in Biblical Studies for which honours are awarded The Religious Studies syllabus has three main areas the philosophical discussion of the nature and content of religious belief ii the study of two major world religions selected from the options available iii the study of religious belief and practice using the techniques of the social and psychological sciences There are compul- sory and optional papers in each of these general areas Texts for the world religions compulsory papers are studied in translation but suitably qualified students may be permitted to commence study of the appropriate original languages The course is non-denominational and non-sectarian in outlook and is concerned to develop the student's capacity to understand the nature of religious belief and practice as they are to be found within living religious traditions in Europe Asia and Africa The Biblical Studies degree is at least as wide-ranging as many degrees in Arts subjects Since the Biblical writings come from very diverse historical cultural and religious settings students will receive thorough grounding in wide range of disciplines historical philo- logical exegetical and theological studies are all prominent in the courses for this degree The only paper which must be taken by all students is on the interpretation of the New Testament in the nine- teenth and twentieth centuries This paper will enable students to consider some of the theological doctrinal and philosophical issues which arise when the diverse Biblical writings are used in Christianity today
