General Information 89 means of recreation and to further the interests of students generally Every registered student of the College is member and is entitled to membership of all College clubs and societies the use of the athletic ground and pavilion and the right to vote at all general meetings and elections Membership of the College Union is also open to members of the academic staff General control of the students' Clubs and Societies is vested in the Union Their constitutions must be approved by the Executive Committee and finally by the Principal The affairs of the Union are governed by an Executive Committee which is elected annually and consists of the Union Officers nine Faculty or Departmental Presidents the Student Services Secretary and the Chairman of King's Organisation for Student Com- munity Action The sovereign body of the Union is the General Meeting which meets about three times term and its decisions are final for the Executive are elected by the student body and are there- fore responsible to them Two grades of clubs and societies exist for the benefit of the mem- bers 'approved' and 'affiliated' The finances of the latter are entirely administered and directed by the Union whilst those of the former are not in any particular the responsibility of the Union of Students The affiliated clubs include The Association Football Badminton Boats Bridge Budokan Canoe Cricket Cross Country Fencing Hockey Judo Netball Rifle Rugby Football Sailing Parachute Swimming Tennis and Table Tennis Clubs the Environmental society the Film society the Mountaineering society the Music society the Photographic society Theatre Workshop King's Singers Joint Christian Council and the Folk Dance club The athletic clubs are governed by captains and officers elected by their members The sporting clubs are the responsibility of the Sports Officer who is the chairman of the sub-committee which reports directly to the Executive Committee and deals exclusively with matters affecting the sporting clubs All sports club secretaries sit on this sub-committee The finances of all affiliated societies are under the control of the Executive Committee of the Union which with the assistance of its Finance Standing Committee determines the amount of the grant to be made to each club from its funds Throughout term time debates and functions of social nature are arranged with view to promoting the corporate life of the College 'Commemoration Week' is normally held each year at the close of
