charter and statutes CHARTER-GRANTED 1st APRIL 1980 In this Our Charter and in the Statutes except where the context otherwise requires- 'the College' has the meaning assigned to it by Article hereof 'the Council' means the Council of the College established by Article hereof 'the Dean' means the person who for the time being holds the office of Dean of the College 'functions' includes powers and duties 'the Principal' means the person who for the time being holds the office of Principal of the College 'Regulations' means Regulations made by the Council in accordance with this Our Charter and the Statutes 'Special Resolution' means resolution passed at one meeting of not less than two-thirds of the member of the Council and confirmed at sub- sequent such meeting held not less than one calendar month nor more than three calendar months after the former meeting where written notice of each meeting and of the object of the meeting has been given to each member of the Council not less than fourteen clear days before the date fixed for the meeting and the resolution has been passed at each meeting by not less than two-thirds of those present and voting the Statutes' means the Statutes referred to in Article 14 hereof 'the University' means Our University of London 'University of London King's College' means the Departments or branches of the University collectively known by that name and administered by the University immediately before the date of this Our Charter Words importing the masculine gender shall where necessary be construed as importing the feminine and words importing the singular number shall where necessary be construed as importing the plural and vice-versa The Corporation of King's College London hereinafter referred to as 'the College' shall forever hereafter be one body corporate and politic by the name and style of King's College London with perpetual succession and Common Seal The College shall hereafter consist of those persons who are for the time being the members of the Council the Fellows the staff and students of the College and of such other persons as may be included by or under the provisions of this Our Charter the Statutes and Regulations The relationship between the College and the University shall be in accordance with the Statutes and Regula- tions of the University The objects of the College shall be to promote education and without prejudice to the generality of the foregoing for that purpose to provide instruc- tion of university standard and to superintend postgraduate studies and to promote research in such branches of learning as may from time to time be 161
