154 Faculties and Courses of Study and summer terms During the Michaelmas term students spend four days week for seven weeks in practice and for most of the Summer term they are in schools for five days per week Students are required to carry out preliminary period of observation and practice for three weeks in primary school before the session begins ADVANCED STUDY OF EDUCATION Courses in preparation for the Diploma in Education and the Phil and Ph degrees in Education are generally run in co- operation with the University of London Institute of Education The advanced course of study for the Diploma in Education extends over not less than one academic year for full-time students and not less than two academic years for part-time students All students will be examined in two of the following subjects Philosophy of Education Comparative Education History of Edu- cation Educational Psychology Sociology of Education Educational Organisation and Administration Theory and Practice of Education Candidates whose knowledge of General Education Theory is con- sidered inadequate may be required to take Theory and Practice of Education as one of their two subjects or to take Paper theory of that subject in addition to their two other subjects Candidates may register as King's College students Teaching which is inter-collegiate with King's College staff participating is located at the Central Institute of Education booklet giving further details is available from the Advanced Studies Department Institute of Educa- tion 20 Bedford Way wci oal Higher Degrees Candidates for other higher degrees except the Ph must have good first degree the Postgraduate Certificate in Education or the equivalent and the Diploma in Education or an equivalent qualification or must pass qualifying examination of standard equivalent to the Diploma in Education Candidates with good Ed degree may be admitted For the Ph degree candidates are expected to hold the Phil or or equivalent Higher degrees of the University of London are normally open only to holders of an approved first degree The degree in Education is awarded on written examination
