Faculties and Courses of Study 147 the combined studies degree of in Theology and Music are given on page 79 Applicants are admitted by the Sub-Dean of the Faculty on behalf of the Dean of the Faculty of Music Full conditions are set out in the General Prospectus of Under- graduate courses available from the Registrar COURSES FOR MUS DEGREE The course for the Mus degree extends over three years The initial terms of study are concerned with the development of student's skills on broad front By his second Christmas vacation he should have firm grounding in several basic aspects of the practice and theory of music so that he is in position to see how his future career might develop and begin to specialise accordingly The syllabus comprises courses in melody harmony and counterpoint 1575- 1850 general repertory three short periods of musical history studied in greater detail aural tests musical analysis keyboard musicianship twentieth-century and non-Western music Attention is also paid to performing and composing skills where these are offered The student's second and third years are spent in preparing for the University's Mus examination which is taken towards the end of the last term In the second year the Faculty will also offer short courses of fairly advanced nature on single aspects of music The Finals Examination at present consists of five subjects and an important viva-voce examination the five subjects being History of Western Music one period chosen for special study Twentieth-century Music Analysis and or Musical Techniques two papers Special Subject either Performance and Interpretation Composition an extended Essay or Non-Western Music However certain details of the Final Mus syllabus are currently under review Candidates are advised to confirm these at time of application The Faculty considers it important that undergraduates should acquire wide experience and knowledge of music and that they should extend their powers of original independent and sustained thought through their musical studies Instruction will be by means of lectures tutorials discussion groups and seminars Undergraduates in their first and second years will be required to attend course of
