Annual Report of the Delegacy cxiii element impurity concentrations in GaP GaAs and diamond Col- laborative work with SERL RRE and the Plessey Company on semi- conductor research is being carried out High-pressure infra-red and Raman studies are being actively pursued by Professor Wilkinson and Dr Sherman The radiophysics group is using outstations at the Norman Lockyer Observatory Sidmouth and at Rogate on continuous basis for their geomagnetic and ionospheric observations The nuclear physics group has been collaborating with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory on studies of the isotopes of samarium with helion beams They have used the Harwell cyclotron and the Harwell Tandem Accelerator in combined experimental and theoretical programme which is now elucidating the role of nuclear deformation in nuclear- particle transfer reactions The theoretical physics group continues its fruitful research on statistical studies of variety of physical phenomena and has had particularly prolific year in terms of original work in various aspects of this field It continues to be an international centre which attracts many visiting scientists from all over the world There have been about sixty research publications from the depart- ment during the year apart from the many lectures given at various universities and conferences The undergraduate successes have been gratifying and the staff student Maxwell Society held successful weekend at Cumberland Lodge in February DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGY Number of Students Undergraduate Sc Zoology 34 Sc Zoology Botany 27 Total attending 16 Courses run by the De- partment 377 Postgraduate full-time part-time Departmental Notes Professor Arthur examined at the Universities of Rhodesia and of Rhodes where he also lectured He was appointed to serve on the Advisory Board of'Zero Population Inc and as Director of Studies of the School of Human Environmental Studies at King's College He
