cxii Annual Report of the Delegacy Staff members have given lectures at large number of universities and international meetings both in this country and abroad Professor Price lectured at the Royal Society Rank Symposium the Royal Dublin Society the NATO Summer School at Oxford the ATMOL Conference at Swansea and the School of Pharmacy Professor Domb gave invited lectures at the University of Lancaster Hebrew University Israel Bedford College St Francis Xavier University Temple Uni- versity Chelsea College and the Universities of Nova Scotia Windsor and Alberta Professor Wilkinson lectured at the IVth International Raman Conference in Maine at the Jubilee celebrations of Fisk University Tennessee and the Gordon Conference New Hampshire Dr Lightowlers gave lectures at the Bell Laboratories New Jersey the Electrochemical Society Chicago the British Associa- tion Oxford the Allen Clark Research Centre Towcester Birkbeck College and the War Office Dr Griffiths gave invited lectures at Oak Ridge National Laboratory Tennessee and at the University of Surrey Drs Ll Jones and Barr presented papers at NATO Advanced-Study Symposium in Norway and participated at Con- ferences at the Hague and Garmisch Drs Collins and Davies presented papers at Conferences in Manchester Oxford and London Dr Sinha lectured at the Nordic Institute Copenhagen where he spent three months on Royal Society Fellowship Dr Potts gave paper at the International UV Radiation Conference in Ham- burg Dr Sherman lectured to the Discussion Group and at the Gordon Conference on High Pressure Spectroscopy Dr Joyce gave paper at the Van der Waals Centennial Conference in Amsterdam The following visiting scientists spent short periods in the department during the year Professor Amit Israel Professor Mitra Dr Coniglio Italy Dr Jungling Germany Grants from outside bodies amounting to about £70 000 have been made to the various departmental research groups to provide equip- ment facilities and research assistance These are listed at the end of the report New developments have been made in all research groups Mole- cular-beam methods have been used to obtain photo-electron spectra of involatile materials Time-resolved spectroscopic studies are being made by the solid-state group to differentiate between luminescent centres in diamond and silicon They are also employing charged- particle techniques using the accelerators at Harwell to determine light-
