cviii Annual Report of the Delegacy Centre for Applied Geology at Jeddah Saudi Arabia to review their technical training programme During the year field courses were held in Normandy Symonds Yat in the area of Aberystwyth and Caernarvon and Northumberland Durham and the Lake District The Lyell Club organised one-day field courses also field trip to the Isle of Wight and the College field centre at Rogate again proved its usefulness as base for other courses The Lyell Club arranged an interesting programme of lectures for the year speakers included Sir Kingsley Dunham who gave the annual Wells lecture entitled 'Global tectonics and ore deposits' The Club successfully organised the Eighth Taylor Memorial Sym- posium entitled 'Recent advances in Precambrian geology' The Chairman was Professor Sutton and the speakers Dr Downie Dr Goldring Dr Briden Dr Bridgewater and Professor Shackleton The Symposium was well attended by staff and students from universities DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS Number of Students Sc Special 60 Sc Joint Honours 69 Sc Ancillary 91 Sc Engineering 159 Postgraduate 48 Departmental Notes Professor Frohlich was invited to address the International Congress of Mathematicians 1974 at Vancouver Canada in August 1974 The title of his talk was 'Galois module structure and Artin L-func- tions' He also gave lectures on the same topic at the Journees d'Arith- metiques 1974 held in Bordeaux and in the Mathematics Depart- ments of the University of Illinois at Urbana at Cornell University Ithaca and of the University of Ann Arbor Michigan He gave short course on 'Hermitian Classgroups' at the University of Illinois at Urbana He lectured on 'Normal integral bases' at the meeting of the London Mathematical Society at York at the Algebra Summer meet- ing in the University of Kingston Ontario at the Algebra Colloquium in the University of London He also addressed the Mathematics Colloquium in the University of Nottingham on 'The Arithmetic of
