CVI Annual Report of the Delegacy Departmental Notes The activity of the Department in teaching and research and in meeting the demands of department college and university administration con- tinues unabated In addition members of staif play their full role in wide range of other activities in learned societies and on national and international committees and in advice to industry The Department despite difficult working conditions continues to attract good appli- cants and to produce good graduates which it is hoped proves that an active and integrated staff is more important than comfortable sur- roundings Professor Prentice served as Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Science during the year and continued as Chairman of the Education Com- mittee of the Geological Society and of the Scientific and Education Committee of the Field Studies Council He is member of the Schools Council Working Group on Geological Education of the Dinantian Working Party of the Geological Society He participated in discussions at conferences on Industrial Minerals and on Waste Disposal Policy and presented paper at conference on Diaphragm Walls and Anchorages and in July as member of the Geoscience and Man Committee of the International Union of Geological Sciences was guest of the Werner Reimers Stiftung at Bad Homburg Professor Howie was re-elected Vice-President of the Geological Society and Principal Editor of Miner alogical Abstracts He continued to serve as Chairman of the Accommodation Committee of the College and continued as Chairman of the Board of Staff Examiners for Standards II and III Geology Sc He attended meeting of the International Mineralogical Association in Berlin in September as Secretary of the Abstracts Commission of the Association and was elected to the Council of the Association In December 1973 he was awarded the Sc degree from the University of Cambridge During the year he gave his well-known lecture on 'Gemstones' to five dif- ferent universities Dr Hancock continued to serve as Treasurer of the Palaeonto- logical Association was elected to the Stratigraphy Committee of the Geological Society of London and became founder member of the International Geological Correlation Programme on Mid-Cretaceous Events In April 1974 Dr Jones attended field meeting of the Palaeon-
