Annual Report of the Delegacy On visit partially funded by grant from the Royal Society Dr Hall gave two lectures at Rutgers University New Jersey He also read paper at conference on anion activation and ion pairs organised by the American Chemical Society at Cape Cod Massa- chusetts and at the laboratories of Smith Kline and French at Phila- delphia Dr Robinson delivered lecture at the XVIth International Con- ference on Co-ordination Chemistry where he also acted as session chairman He was an invited participant at the First European In- organic Chemistry Symposium held in Munich Dr Chissick was appointed College Safety Officer and performed the duties of this office in addition to his work in the Department The Department's research interests are reflected in the titles of over sixty publications by its members as detailed elsewhere in this Report Members of the Department have again been successful in securing number of the competitive special research grants from the Science Research Council Of other grants it is particularly gratifying to record an award of £10 340 to Professor Mason from the Leverhulme Trust Fund in support of the study of the History of Chemistry in Britain In spite of nation-wide decline in the number of chemistry students the Department continues to attract students of high calibre The predicted national shortage of graduate chemists is beginning to be noticeable There is now considerable excess of job vacancies over the number of chemistry graduates holders of our higher degrees being particularly in demand DEPARTMENT OF GEOLOGY 1u 11 ν Number of Students Sc with Geology as major subject 40 Sc degree Geology Geography 12 Geology Chemistry Geology Physics Subsid Geology to Hons Geography Sc Engineering 25 Postgraduates 11 inch part-time Geology as minor subject 37 Chelsea College Queen Mary College
