xcii Annual Report of the Delegacy Departmental Notes Professor Brownlee examined at the Universities of Ibadan and of the West Indies where he also lectured He continued his research with Miss Elizabeth Kean on the sympathetic nervous control of the flow of blood in the limbs of the anaesthetised cat and on the additional factors which influence the nature of this control During this year our numbers entering the degree course in Pharma- cology again increased the high proportion of upper second-class honours achieved was satisfactory and appeared to justify the policy of accepting only well-qualified entrants after interview We look forward with keen anticipation to the improved facilities that rehabilitation of the old Chemistry laboratory will provide for our second- and third-year students in October 1974 In common with the other departments within the Faculty of Medical Science great deal of detailed timetable work and planning for the new integrated course beginning in October 1974 was undertaken and much of this fell on Dr Littleton's shoulders Dr Paterson continued investigations into the mode of action of substances causing fall in intraocular pressure in particular those substances used in the treatment of chronic simple glaucoma Together with Mrs Al-Jubouri and Mr Wayyes he has been extending research on the genesis of congenital hypertension in an inbred strain of rats in particular the implication of central nervous control mecha- nisms in the production of arterial hypertension With Mrs Oser research continued on intracellular recording from developing skeletal muscle Dr Paterson lectured at the University of Kent Moorfields Eye Hospital and the Institute of Ophthalmology He was also invited to give paper at an international symposium on glaucoma held in Albi Dr Littleton and Mr Griffiths continued investigation into the biochemical basis of alcohol dependence Dr Ortiz has returned to Lima Peru Dr Littleton and Mr Κ MacLean have produced evidence linking biochemical changes produced by cannabis deriva- tives with environmental conditions under which the drug is adminis- tered Dr Littleton and Miss Ryan began research into the relation- ship between brain catecholamines and fall in body temperatures Dr Κ Morton has continued his studies on the mechanism of action on smooth muscle of autacoids including the prostaglandins with particular regard to the ionic requirements for their action
