Annual Report of the Delegacy xci research in the department continued at high level and several members of staff were awarded important grants for research and have taken an active part in various conferences and meetings Professor Arnstein gave two papers by invitation at the international symposium on 'Ribosomes and Protein Biosynthesis' which was held at Schloss Reinhardsbrunn German Democratic Republic on May 13th-16th 1974 He also gave lectures to the Student Biochemical Society of Bedford College and at Chelsea College and contributed paper to the 9th meeting of the Federation of European Biochemical Societies in Budapest In recognition of his work for FEBS as Secretary-General and former Chairman of the Advanced Courses Committee he has been awarded the FEBS diplome d'honneur Dr Darbre also attended the 9th FEBS meeting in Budapest and gave two papers one with Butler the other with Minnie Ran- garajan as co-authors He was invited to lecture on gas-liquid chroma- tography of amino acids at Biochemical Society colloquium held at Bristol University on September 28th 1973 and to give talk on careers in biochemistry on behalf of the Biochemical Society at Sixth Form Conference held at Willesden College of Technology on July 3rd 1974 During the session Dr Kogut visited eight medical schools in the United States and Canada having been awarded grant from the Nuffield Foundation to study the development of new curricula and teaching methods in basic sciences for medical students In the summer vacation she worked as visiting scientist in the Department of Biology University of Ottawa Canada Another visit of sixth-form boys from Highgate School took place on December 7th 1973 and was again very successful Several members of staff demonstrated advanced research equipment and gave talks about their work which were much appreciated DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACOLOGY Number of Students 251 Sc 38 Postgraduate First Degrees 2nd Class Honours Upper Division 12 2nd Class Honours Lower Division
