xc Annual Report of the Delegacy Dr Firth has continued his researches in developing new techniques for the cytochemical demonstration of intracellular phosphatases He has also played prominent role in the designing of the new Histology and Cell Biology course for the new medical curriculum particularly from the aspect of inter-departmental integration Dr Thornton read two papers to the Society of Endocrinology He has continued to study the mechanisms of brain-pituitary control with special emphasis on endocrine regulation of hormone synthesis Dr Paterson joined the department at the beginning of the session She has commenced an investigation of the influence of endocrine secretions on learning and also study of the adrenergic supply to the preoptic nucleus of the goldfish Dr Bozman joined the department during the session and has been principally involved in helping to reorganise the courses of topographi- cal and neuroanatomy and embryology DEPARTMENT OF BIOCHEMISTRY Number of Students 251 61 Sc intercalated degree for medical students April 1973-June 1974 April 1974-June 1975 Sc School of Biological Sciences 73 Ph 13 Departmental Notes During the year the University approved the establishment of Readership in Biochemistry and Dr Scrutton formerly of Temple University School of Medicine Philadelphia has been ap- pointed to this new post which will be concerned particularly with the first- and second-year biochemistry courses for medical and dental students Planning of these courses which form part of the revised curricula for medical and dental degrees has occupied much time and it will be interesting to observe how various novel ideas which are being incorporated will work out in practice when the new courses start during the coming session It is gratifying to report that despite the heavy load of paper work and meetings that resulted from the changes in the medical courses
