Annual Report of the Delegacy lxxxix The Department suffered the tragic loss of Sir Francis Knowles who died suddenly on July 13 th He had greatly expanded the scope of the department during his seven years as Head of Department His loss will be much felt by all who had the privilege of working with him During the session Sir Francis had continued to be member of the Science Board of the Science Research Council and Chairman of its Biological Sciences Committee He was also elected member of the Council of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom Following the Sixth International Symposium on Neurosecretion in London in September 1973 which Sir Francis had organised he was actively engaged in editing the Proceedings of this Symposium in collaboration with Professor Vollrath Sir Francis and Professor Vollrath have continued their collaboration with workers in Lund Sweden and have extended their European research programme aided by grant from the Wellcome Trust The scientific contacts with workers from abroad have greatly furthered the neuroendocrine research in this Department which is supported by grant of the Science Research Council Professor Vollrath has continued his research into the functional significance of the synaptic ribbons of the mammalian pineal gland Under his guidance the Ph student Dr Kantarjian has been continuing her work on functional aspects of the mammalian pineal gland during pregnancy Professor Vollrath has been invited to and accepted the post of Professor of Histology and Embryology at the University of Mainz Germany Dr Cordingley was elected to the Education Committee of the Hertfordshire County Council as 'a person with University experi- ence' He was also elected as Governor of Hatfield Polytechnic During the year he accepted an invitation to visit for three months the Department of Anatomy in the University of Rhodesia He has continued his research activities in the field of macrophage activity He acted as external examiner in the Diploma examinations of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy the Council of Occupational Therapists and the Society of Chiropodists He has contributed number of reviews for the journal Physiotherapy Dr Brown gave an invitedMecture to meeting of the British Association of Orthodontists He was appointed to the Dental Subcommittee of the British Postgraduate Medical Federation He has reviewed books for the British Dental Journal and the Journal of the British Endodontic Society
