Annual Report of the Delegacy lxxxv Amparai Sri Lanka We congratulate him on this distinction and congratulate also Mr Gosney who has been elected President of the Institute of Refrigeration for 1974-75 and Dr Norman Kendall who has been elected Fellow Commoner of Churchill College Cambridge Also worthy of mention is the election of Dr English as Mech Two new members of academic staff Dr Organ and Dr Fenner have joined the department Dr Organ who holds degrees from the University of Birmingham and the University of Toronto and has been lecturer at Birmingham came to us from the Instituto Tecnologico de Aeronautica Est Brazil where he held British Council Professorship He is an expert on the Deformation of Metals and also on Thermal Power Engineering Dr Fenner who took both his first degree and his Ph at Imperial College was employed in the Research Department of British Rail at Derby He has also had experi- ence as stress analyst in Switzerland and in Australia and his special field of interest is the Mechanics of Fractures Dr Organ and Dr Fenner together form most valuable addition to our resources in teaching and research and we are very pleased to welcome them During the session Dr Tindal paid working visit to Czecho- Slovakia and exchanged notes with workers in the internal-combustion engineering field at technical universities research institutes and engine manufacturers in Prague and Bratislava He also attended discussions in these centres on research and engineering education Professor Η Rose visited Japan under the auspices of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science During his visit he was received at twelve universities and several establishments He also gave number of lectures and on his return journey called at the Indian Institute of Technology Powai Other staff members took part in various symposia and conferences and gave lectures at institutions in this country Good progress has been made with research in number of direc- tions Equipment is now available in the department for measuring the level of all the more important gases which may be emitted from internal-combustion engine exhausts and also the smoke level in the case of diesel engines This has enabled the results of the research programme concerned with cylinder gas-flow patterns to be related to the combustion process Work also continues in close collaboration with industry and under the direction of Dr Williams on the measurement of lead particulate emission from petrol engines further line of research is concerned with engine noise and attempts are
