Annual Report of the Delegacy lxxxiii was approved by the College and will accept students from the beginning of the 1975-76 session The objective is to allow about half of the undergraduate class to specialise in computer engineering within the broad framework of the course unit degree The Department has noted with pleasure the achievement of five third-year students in obtaining first-class honours degrees this session the highest total for many years The acquisition of high-capacity disc memory for the Department's Nova computer has allowed substantial expansion of highly sophisticated computing facilities for undergraduate teaching and postgraduate research The national shortage of suitably qualified research postgraduates once again impeded the growth of research activities nevertheless significant progress was made in several areas Professor Turner's group in ultrasonics continued their work on ultrasonic imaging non- linear interactions and long-delay systems Dr Deeley was successful in achieving greatly improved accuracy for his speed measurements on moving steel strip Professor Lindsay's students continued their work in non-linear optics and plasma calculations Dr Adby's work on computer-aided design made good progress and he delivered papers at conferences held in Southampton and London during the session During the summer vacation he began period of industrial leave at Milliard Research Laboratories Professor Turner chaired session at the conference on Component Performance and Systems Applications of Surface Acoustic Wave Devices held at Aviemore Scotland in September 1973 and attended the Solid State Devices Research Conference at Nottingham Uni- versity September 1974 and the Conference on 'Higher Education and the Electronics Industry' held at the Royal Holloway College in March 1974 He also visited the electronics research laboratories at Stanford University and the University of California Berkeley as well as the University of Washington in Seattle He lectured on non- linear acoustics to the Electronics Department Chelsea College and to the Research Laboratory of ISEN Lille He also gave lecture on superconductivity to the sixth-form society at Isleworth Grammar School During the session academic links were established with the Institut Superieure d'Electronique du Nord Lille It is hoped that exchanges of both undergraduates and postgraduates may become possible in the near future Professor Turner visited Lille in June 1974 and in his capacity as Student Adviser of the Section of was
