Annual Report of the Delegacy lxxxi tion on 'Movements in concrete' and 'Advanced concrete technology' Professor Gibson continues to serve as Chairman of the Editorial Panel of Geotechnique and Professor Nash as Secretary General of the Inter- national Society for Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering on behalf of which he visited Brussels and Stockholm during the year to co-ordinate their long-term planning Dr England attended the international symposium on Discrete Methods in Engineering held in Milan in September 1974 and presented paper in the section on non-linear problems Dr Stefanou who was welcome visitor from the University of Athens working with Dr England also presented paper on work which he had carried out during his three months stay in the College In April 1974 Dr England was awarded the Sc Eng degree of the University of London for his work in the field of analysis of materials and structures exhibiting time-dependent behaviour He was appointed consultant to the Inspectorate of Nuclear Installations of the Department of Energy Professor Nash continued to serve as Chairman of the Civil Engineer- ing Moderators of the Examinations Committee of the Council of Engineering Institutions He also served on the Examinations Com- mittee of the Institution of Civil Engineers and he and the whole Department spent some time preparing evidence for the Chilver Committee on the Education and Training of Civil Engineers set up by the Institution This was presented in the form of report which was spoken to by Dr Dixon Dr Illston also gave evidence on his own behalf Professor Nash and Dr Dougill acted as examiners for Profes- sional Interviews of candidates for Corporate Membership at the Institution of Civil Engineers The advice of many members of the staff has been sought in connec- tion with various large civil engineering projects Thus Professor Nash and Dr Jefferis have been advising on the foundations of the new Humber Bridge and Dr Bassett on the York ring road and the Thames barrage Dr White has been actively engaged on research in connection with the design of structures for the North Sea exploration and has been awarded an research grant for Ā£8 750 to support an investigation into the estimation of wave forces on such structures using method of superposition His work on the mathematical modelling of hydrological structures has continued and has led to the construction of finite-element model of the Plynlimon experimental catchment in Wales The Department has greatly appreciated the continuing help given by our Visiting Professor Sir Norman Rown-
